Supreme Court Rules Biden Cannot Forgive Student Debt by Executive Order

Just the News

The Supreme Court on Friday ruled 6-3 that the Biden administration does not have the authority to unilaterally cancel student loan debt.

Student loan forgiveness was a political point that President Joe Biden ran on during his 2020 election campaign. The Supreme Court ruled that the White House does not have the authority to wipe out hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt unilaterally and without any congressional involvement.

Biden’s administration had previously argued that the president maintained that authority under existing education statute.

Higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz stated that about 14 million people would have had their student debt eliminated entirely if the ruling had gone the opposite way, CNBC News reports.
