Viasat, a global telecommunications giant, announced an expansion in Arizona that will add 1,500 jobs in the state.

The new construction will include “a 135,000-square-foot building, an outdoor atrium, open space for events and employee recreation, and a parking structure,” according to a report from Community Impact.

“Tempe welcomes the expansion of Viasat at the ASU Research Park. The company creates technology that helps shape global communications,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. “Our city is proud to be able to offer the highly educated workforce; the central location; and the array of supportive, innovative companies that can help Viasat thrive.”

The satellite broadband company expects part of the investment to be completed by 2024.

“1,500 JOBS! With low taxes, minimal regulations and an exceptional quality of life, it’s no wonder companies are choosing to expand in Arizona,” said Governor Doug Ducey.

In 2014, the company also expanded its capabilities in the area. The additions consisted of “a manufacturing building, 2-story office building, and extensive indoor and outdoor amenity areas.” According to the group, the Arizona locations focus on “design and manufacturing of advanced microwave communication and radar products, radio frequency systems, and cybersecurity.”

The state has experienced steadfast population and economic growth. According to a report from the Economic and Business Research Center at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management, the state’s economy recovered faster from the coronavirus pandemic than many of its counterparts.

“Arizona replaced the jobs lost during the early months of the pandemic faster than the U.S. primarily because the initial job loss was not as severe as it was nationally. This is likely due to the less restrictive stay-at-home order in Arizona compared to some other states around the country,” the report detailed.
