Former President Trump on Thursday formally endorsed former NFL running-back Herschel Walker in his quest to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate.

The move by Trump does not come as a surprise, as Trump strongly encouraged Walker to launch a campaign for the position.

“Herschel Walker is a friend, a Patriot, and an outstanding American who is going to be a GREAT United States Senator. He embodies “America First” and the winning spirit of Georgia. Herschel is tough on Crime and Borders, and he will always stand in support of Law Enforcement, Military, and our Vets,” Trump described in the statement.

Further, Trump told voters that Walker would fight for the Second Amendment protections, among other conservative priorities.

“He will fight hard for our Second Amendment and Voter Integrity. Herschel Walker will never let you down. He was a great football player and will be an even better U.S. Senator—if that is even possible. He has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump continued.

Even though Walker’s campaign officially launched just days ago, the former University of Georgia player has pulled together a string of endorsements, including Trump’s.

After declaring his candidacy, U.S. Representative Buddy Carter (R-GA-01) immediately endorsed Walker.

“I’m proud to join President Trump and endorse my friend, @HerschelWalker, for U.S. Senate. We need a fighter who will take on the liberal mob’s socialist agenda and put America FIRST. I urge you to join me in supporting Herschel for Senate,” said Carter.

When announcing his candidacy, Walker pledged to “protect the American Dream for everybody,” joining his campaign motto of “Run, Fight, Win.”

The strong support from Trump will likely boost Walker’s efforts in a crowded GOP primary field including Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black.
