Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be closing in on former President Donald Trump with just one point separating the pair, according to a poll released on Thursday.
The poll, conducted by the New York Times and Siena College, found that 48% of likely voters said they would be voting for Trump in the upcoming election, while 47% said they will vote Harris. Trump leads Harris by two points among registered voters, with 48% of the vote compared to the vice president’s 46%.
The same poll conducted earlier this month found President Joe Biden trailing Trump by six points, showing a surge of support for Harris, who has garnered attention from people of color and young voters. Both are considered important Democratic voting blocs that were not energized by Biden.
The majority of Democratic respondents (70%) also said they would like to see the party unite behind Harris as the new nominee in August, instead of fielding a larger group of candidates.
A Marist poll that was published on Tuesday also showed Harris just one point shy of Trump. But Trump led Harris 46% to 45% in that poll.
The Siena College and New York Times poll was conducted from Monday through Wednesday, and surveyed 1,142 voters nationwide. It had a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
