The U.S. Marshals Service in Memphis is now offering a reward for information leading to the arrests of suspects involved in a deadly mass shooting at a Memphis park last weekend.
“The U.S. Marshals Service is currently offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the individuals responsible for the deadly shooting in Orange Mound,” the law enforcement entity said in a press release.
Last week, there was a block party at Carnes Avenue and Grand Street in the Orange Mound neighborhood in Memphis.
Between 200 and 300 were gathered, and at least two unidentified shooters opened fire on the crowd. Two people, one aged 17 and the other 22, were killed. Seven others were wounded.
“The U.S. Marshals Service is committed to partnering with the Memphis Police Department to bring those responsible to justice,” said U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller. “We hope this reward money will encourage someone to come forward and assist in solving this case.”
CrimeStoppers is also offering a $15,000 reward for information that leads to arrests.
Interim Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis reportedly said that the city will pursue federal charges against the perpetrators, noting that the weaponry allegedly used in the shooting violated federal law.
“Because the Memphis Police Department has made efforts to prosecute through the state but when you have glock switches and you have extended magazines, it’s time to pursue federal charges on some of these offenders,” Davis said.
“We are utilizing all intel, information, that we can gather, not just from Memphis Police Department but from our federal partners, too,” Davis said. “The FBI, we’ve called in the ATF and other individuals to help support in this effort. The type of weaponry, the type of activity, that we’re seeing in our parks are unacceptable.”
Crime in Memphis has recently exploded to record proportions.
As reported by The Tennessee Star, Memphis had the highest murder rate of any major city in 2023.
The city had a murder rate of 63.9 homicides per 100,000 people that year.
“Memphis’ murder rate exceeded the murder rate of Chicago, which reported 23.2 murders per 100,000 people, and Philadelphia, which saw 26 murders per 100,000 people,” The Star reported. “The city also fared worse than cities with a similar or lower population, with the murder rate in Memphis also exceeding the murder rates of Baltimore, Detroit, and New Orleans.”
