The hearing Republicans are calling for would increase public scrutiny on Google’s AI application and potentially inherent bias.
Conservative and Republican groups nationwide are urging House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to hold a hearing about potential problems posed by Google Gemini, with concerns specifically about whether it could influence the 2024 presidential election.
“With President Trump the decisive favorite to win in November, it’s clear that Big Tech giants will try to pull the same tricks as last time to throw the election to the Democrats,” the groups wrote to Jordan this week in a letter exclusively obtained by Just the News.
Jordan has called on Big Tech companies to turn over documents about their contacts with the White House, and he has demanded that Google hand over documents about how the White House may have influenced the development of Gemini.
The executive branch has also faced multiple lawsuits about its alleged efforts to pressure Big Tech companies to censor users’ posts discussing topics such as COVID-19 and the 2020 election. Additionally, the FBI confirmed last month that its Foreign Influence Task Force is in contact with social media companies ahead of the 2024 election.
A hearing like the one the Republicans are calling for would increase public scrutiny on Google.
“Unfortunately, as tech giants ramp up their crusade against Trump ahead of the 2024 election, 15 new technologies like generative AI will give them even more powerful tools to boost Democrats’ electoral prospects than four years prior,” the conservatives also wrote. “[I]t’s more important than ever for Republicans in Congress to scrutinize Google’s monopolistic AI efforts, particularly given the threat it could pose to election integrity in 2024 and beyond.”
The letter was signed by seven conservative leaders from six different organizations: Aiden Buzzeti and Ziven Havens, both leaders of the Bull Moose Project, as well as American Principles Project Policy Director Jon Schweppe, Citizens for Renewing America Executive Director Wade Miller, American Accountability Foundation Action President Tom Jones, New York Young Republican Club President Gavin Wax and National Constitutional Law Union Chairman John Pierce.
