After a short reprieve gas prices in Tennessee are once again on the rise, defying traditional patterns.
Monday’s average gas price per gallon in the Volunteer State was $3.09 per gallon, up from $3.07 a week ago, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
A month ago, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in Tennessee was $2.98, while a year ago, it was $3.10.
The average price of a gallon of gas is currently highest in Williamson county, at $3.33. Trailing closely behind is Haywood County at $3.27 and Houston at $3.26. Gas prices in Davidson County average $3.14.
In June of 2022, gas prices reached their highest ever recorded levels in many states, including Tennessee.
On June 22 of last year, a gallon of gas in Tennessee averaged $4.64.
Historically, gas prices tend to decrease during presidential election years, though according to some, the conclusion that such price dips are politically motivated might just be lore.
“When a president comes into office, they can set the stage as far as energy policies that signals to the market that can have a big impact on whether prices rise or fall,” Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst at The PRICE Futures Group told Fox News last year. “The reality is the president can make policies that can make prices cheaper than they would have been.”
But Denton Cinquegrana, the Oil Price Information Services (OPIS) Chief Oil Analyst, says that oil pricing has little to do with the commander in chief, claiming that gas prices typically drop during the fall due to the deployment of winter-grade gasoline at gas stations, which is cheaper than gas produced during other seasons.
During former President Donald Trump, the highest average gas price per gallon in the United States only reached $2.81 in 2018.
Under President Joe Biden, the highest average gas price per gallon was $4.06 in 2022.
During every year of Biden’s presidency, average gas prices have been higher than $2.81, the peak price during Trump’s tenure. The lowest average price per gallon under Biden has been $3.10.
