Radio show host and former television anchor Megyn Kelly sat down with former President Donald Trump on her SiriusXM show on Thursday for a wide-ranging interview.
One of the questions Kelly asked Trump was his overall thought process behind running for president again instead of retiring and enjoying his wealth, acknowledging his prior lifestyle of being noncontroversial.
“You were pretty much universally liked or loved before you got into politics – I mean you were known all over the world, you’re a big celebrity, everyone knew you and liked you, you weren’t controversial…You could be going into your 78th year enjoying this beautiful golf course, Mar-a-Lago, your lovely family. You don’t have to be running for president, sitting for four criminal trials – some civil – and possibly looking at jail time,” Kelly noted before asking, “Is it worth it?”
“Yeah,” Trump replied. “Make America Great Again. “Our Country is going to hell…The country, I believe, has one last chance. This is the most important election we’ve ever had – you know I used to say 2016 was the most important – it was a very important election, and we turned the country around… But our country is going bad – our country is being destroyed.”
“We are a nation in decline. We are really a declining nation. We’re a nation in serious, serious decline, and I think I can turn it around very fast,” Trump added. “So, I agree – I could enjoy all over the world, have the most beautiful places in the world – I have the best of everything – but I actually like doing this because of the fact that I see something that we have to save our country.”
“You know I have the expression ‘Make America Great Again’ and I was going to stop using that. It was going to be called ‘Keep America Great,’ but because such destruction took place over such a short period of time, I had to go back to ‘Make America Great Again’ because America – our country – right now is not great. Our country is in trouble. Our country is laughed at.”
During the hour-long interview, Kelly also pressed Trump on many other topics, including his administration’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, his handling of classified documents, and the newly-announced impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
