The Supreme Court declined Monday to review challenges to state and local lawsuits against oil companies seeking to force them to pay for damages allegedly caused by climate change.

A man is being held in Florida on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer after police charged him with sexual battery against a 14-year-old girl who he allegedly transported to the state from Georgia. Public records reveal Luis Mario Santizo-Mendez, 18, was booked into the Miami Dade County jail on Tuesday, where he was charged with lewd or lascivious battery on a child, and is now precluded from release due to both an immigration hold and an out-of-state warrant that may pertain to alleged crimes he may have committed in Georgia. He was initially granted a $7,500 bond.

Ohio’s next U.S. senator is in the hands of Gov. Mike DeWine after Vice President-elect J.D. Vance submitted his resignation Thursday night. Vance, whose resignation took effect at midnight Friday morning, promised to help President-elect Donald Trump push his agenda forward as vice president. Trump and Vance will be sworn in Jan. 20.

The Biden administration rolled out deportation protections to nearly a million foreign nationals living in the United States, including hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans. More than 900,000 beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will be allowed to register for an 18-month extension, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Friday. The massive roll out — just days before President Joe Biden leaves office and President-elect Donald Trump returns to power — includes TPS extensions for roughly 600,000 Venezuelans living in the country.
