A Marquette University professor said the American flag makes him “anxious” in a National Public Radio interview Wednesday.
Philosophy Professor Grant Silva told an interviewer with WUWM, an NPR affiliate station in Milwaukee, that he feels “anxious” when he sees an American flag. In the interview, Silva (pictured above) described how “excessive imagery” of American flags is borderline “nationalism.”
“I also get a little bit anxious around the excessive imagery of the flag in part because in my experience, patriotism quickly slips into nationalism,” Silva said. “Especially the simplistic version of patriotism, the flag-waving, my country love it or leave it kind of attitude. That is just a hop, skip and a jump away from becoming nationalism.”
Silva also said that the flag has several different meanings and can represent “exclusion” for some.
“As much as I would like to see the flag displayed in a proud manner, it all too quickly takes on the stakes that, as a non-white person, can mean a lot, right?” Silva said. “It can mean a sense of inclusion or exclusion. A sense of belonging or the ascription of perpetual foreigner, perpetual outsider status; that that flag is not for me unless I’m willing to abide by the assimilatory paradigm that some of these individuals that you’re talking about tend to put forward.”
Silva resonated with radio show host Teran Powell, who discussed her own anxiety “caused” by the national flag, telling the story of how she saw several American flags while traveling through Illinois and all she wanted to do was “hurry up and leave.”

What an idiot, so the ignorant fool thinks nationalism is bad? What about his communistic stupidism!
if you do not like the flag, then find a country whose flag you adore, and go move there, please. This flag is going to be in your face, as long as you are in the USA.
Would you want your son or daughter being taught, or even in the same room with someone this unstable and fragile psychologically? I wouldn’t.
Well, move on then, Silva – to a place that doesn’t make you feel anxious. You injected the term non-white into the discussion. Which countries are non-white enough to allay your anxiety? Same for the NPR radio show host.
By the way, from the picture shown of Prof. Silva, it is certainly a stretch to call himself non-white. Or is it not about skin-color at all?
Then they should leave America. Don’t be upset, just leave.
These people are out of touch with reality. Why don’t they move to Cuba, China or Russia so they can experience REAL anxiety not some sort of pseudo feelings they are having. I’m sure the flags of those countries would make them feel real happy. Then they can experience socialism instead of nationalism, that’s really much better right?
Apparently just because you have passed some exams to say you are qualified to a professional in the education system doesn’t mean that you are intelligent. This buttercup who more than likely never served in any military service needs to suck it up. Respecting the flag means you are respecting all of the people in this country.
the flag is everywhere, on pants and license plates, buildings, they must constantly on the run. scary. Since when is nationalism bad? this is a philosophy professor and he can’t even calm himself and take a philosophical attitude like say, socrates did? what a wuss. this is leading into banning the flag for being a microaggression. nationalism is being proud of your nation. the flag is national. i go around san jose and all over town theyre flying mexican flags.that’s nationalism in the wrong country.that makes ME anxious. that guy has antifa on his side. what do i have? what does assimilatory paradigm mean? gosh darn he must be smart if he can say words like that.
America! LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!
Feel free to leave, pusshead. Need a plane ticket? I’ll take care of it.
Perhaps the college professor who has anxiety from our flag should move to a country whose flag makes him feel good. He won’t be missed in our wonderful country !
Well said, Jim!
I love our country and our Flag for what it represents. So sad where our Nation is heading under these Libs and Communists. These
Professors and NPR radio hosts should not even enjoy all that our country offers. Please go to a country that you respect and let us enjoy our Freedoms and Our Father In Heaven and success that you all are trying to destroy
That’s right on! Send him to some outhouse country where he has no home, no money, and no RIGHTS!
Right on !
You know what makes me anxious? Left-wing goons do. And this America-hating pseudointellectual is teaching your kids! God save the queen, Joe.
People like both of you make me sick, go ahead and leave you won’t be missed!
What?? I think you should join Professor Silva. He is a highly educated person – if he fears for his life, he should flee. That is the usual response. But, if he is lying and just wants to see America become a Marxist mess, he is a typical leftist fraud. He fears that this is a country based on the people and not the elites.
All nations fly their flag, I guess the Chinese, North Koreans, Russian, many Middle Eastern countries treat people like we do in the United States with all the freedoms that we have. I would like to pay the airline tickets to move there, anybody want to help me pay?
