A flood of unsolicited GOP fundraising emails allegedly spurred an American man living in Thailand to make death threats against Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), former Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and their aides, according to a criminal complaint that triggered the man’s arrest last week.
The FBI arrested Eric Welton, 51, at the Atlanta airport Thursday as he returned to the U.S. from abroad, the Justice Department said. He’s currently charged with one count of threatening a federal official, but additional charges could be added in the coming weeks.
An initial criminal complaint against Welton was filed in North Carolina in December 2021 and updated a year later to add allegations that Welton also threatened officials and Marine guards at the U.S. Consulate in Chiang Mai, Thailand, over the denial of a visa to his Thai wife.
