Nashville Electric Service (NES) announced three upcoming “planned” power outages in order to “perform maintenance and upgrade electrical equipment” – the first of which is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Three day later on Saturday, June 3, the utility said a planned blackout on Hillsboro Road will take place for most of the daylight hours.
The news comes as the unofficial start to summer kicks off and with it, higher temperatures.

“Planned outages are necessary for our crews to safely perform maintenance and upgrade electrical equipment. If work is scheduled in your area, our goal is to contact you in advance by sending a postcard or voicemail message. Crews will isolate the area and complete the work as quickly as possible to get power back on,” NES states on its website.
The times and locations for the upcoming planned outages, NES said, are:
- Wednesday, May 31: 3rd Avenue North from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Saturday, June 3: Hillsboro Road from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- Thursday, June 8: Hanford Avenue from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Some Nashville businesses are concerned about losing business and inventory due to the outages, FOX 17 Nashville reports. One store that sells perishable pet products may lose up to $10,000 worth of product due to the outages cutting power to refrigerators and freezers, according to the outlet.
“If it is thawed out for more than two hours, it has the potential to go bad and obviously spoil,” Emily Williams, marketing manager at Pet Wants Nashville, told FOX 17.
When asked by the outlet if it will reimburse businesses or residents for lost revenue during the outages, NES said it cannot provide reimbursements of any kind to impacted customers.
During NES’s 14-hour planned outage on Saturday, June 3, temperatures are expected to reach nearly 90 degrees in Nashville, according to The Weather Channel.
Last year, NES did not cancel its planned outages for excessive heat, according to NewsChannel 5. The power company continued with its planned outages through a heat advisory, one which lasted 8 hours, according to the outlet.
