Former President Donald Trump is gaining support from minorities and both Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis – the top two potential Republican candidates for 2024 – are poised to beat President Joe Biden, spelling trouble for the president as he runs for reelection, according to a poll released Sunday.
Biden is losing support from black and Hispanic Americans as Trump is gaining, according to a Langer Research Associates poll produced for ABC News.
Just 52 percent of black Americans approve of Biden, compared to 82 percent when he entered office. Meanwhile, 27 percent of black people and 43 percent of Hispanic people say they would definitely or probably vote for Trump in 2024. Trump won 12 percent of black voters in 2020 and 32 percent of Hispanic voters.
In a hypothetical 2024 matchup, Biden is behind Trump 38 percent to 44 percent, with 12 percent of voters still undecided. However, when the undecided Americans are asked which way they lean, 49 percent say Trump to 42 percent for Biden.
In a matchup between Biden and DeSantis, who has not yet announced his presidential campaign, 42 percent of Americans said they would definitely or probably vote for DeSantis compared to 37 percent for Biden with 16 percent undecided. Of the undecided Americans, 48 percent lean toward DeSantis compared to 41 percent for Biden.
Biden’s approval rating of 36 percent is the lowest on record for any first-term president within a year and a half from the next election, according to polling dating back to Harry Truman, ABC reported. Other presidents similarly situated at this point in the election cycle, such as Gerald Ford at 40 percent, Jimmy Carter at 37 percent and Trump at 39 percent, were not reelected.
Biden’s mental and physical fitness is a major factor for voters.
While 44 percent of Americans see Biden’s potential opponent, Trump, as too old for another term, 68 percent see Biden as too old, including 48 percent of Democrats.
Most Americans see Trump, who is 76, as being “in good enough physical health” and having the “mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president,” at 64 percent and 54 percent, respectively. About a third of Americans say Biden is in good enough mental and physical health to serve.
Additionally, Americans say Trump handled the economy better when he was in office than Biden by 54-36 percent.
The poll was conducted April 28-May 3, 2023 in English and Spanish with a random sample of 1,006 adults and it has a 3.5 percent margin of error.
