Davidson County Republican Party Chairman Jim Garrett announced he will not seek chairmanship in the group’s upcoming reorganization meeting and endorsed Lonnie Spivak to succeed him as chairman.
In an email to Davidson County Republicans on Friday, Garrett wrote, “I am officially notifying you that I will not seek the position of Chairman in our upcoming reorganization meeting. I submit that Lonnie Spivak will make an excellent Chairman and will do my utmost to help him secure that position.”
Garrett further stated he is “appreciative to have been given the opportunity to lead” the Davidson County Republican Party but believes his talents would be “better used elsewhere.”
“Although I have enjoyed the successes, and we have been able to accomplish greatly in getting our grassroots membership grown down to the precinct level, I feel it is time to turn my energies towards affecting public policy for all Tennesseans,” Garrett wrote.

Spivak, a political veteran and community leader, announced his candidacy for the chairmanship of the Davidson County Republican Party in January, stating he believes he has “the experience and vision” necessary to lead the county’s Republican Party.
CEO and Editor-in-chief of The Tennessee Star Michael Patrick Leahy, who also hosts The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – recently endorsed Spivak as the next chairman of the Davidson County Republican Party.

Having run for Congress and the Metro Nashville City Council, Spivak has a long history of involvement in politics in the Nashville area. He has served on the Davidson County Executive Committee, as the president of StopAMP, and as the founder of Nashville Smart. Spivak is also a marketing professional, an author, the former treasurer of the Tennessee Higher Education Initiative, and the executive director of the Slick Lawson Foundation.
Bona fide members of the Davidson County Republican Party will elect a new chairman on February 11 during the group’s reorganizational convention at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville.
