Tennessee State Representative Ron Gant was airlifted to Regional One in Memphis, Tennessee, after being seriously injured in a car accident on Wednesday night in Hardeman County.
Since the initial reports broke, a spokesperson for State Rep. Gant detailed the extent of his injuries in a Facebook post Saturday evening:
Ron is in intensive care in stable condition. He has had two successful surgeries to repair his left and right arms and shattered left hip. He is still waiting to know if the left leg and knee need an operation. The broken sternum and ribs will heal on their own. The second CAT scan showed no increased brain trauma or swelling, the damaged spleen and bruised intestines are not causing major concern.
Authorities reported the accident occurred on Highway 18 south Wednesday evening, when a car crossed over a lane of traffic, resulting in a head-on collision.
The driver of the other vehicle, Marcus Cheairs, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Tennessee Highway Patrol told reporters.
A Gant spokesperson said that the state representative is mourning the loss of Cheairs, and called “for everyone to pray for them during this time.”
In a Sunday update, a Gant spokesperson is in stable condition in the intensive care unit of Regional One Health in Memphis.
“His pain is being managed by his team of doctors and nurses. He has a long road to recovery with the injuries that he sustained, but is thankful to just be alive. He is in good spirits surrounded by family and friends,” the update read.
“We are grateful to the ICU team of doctors and nurses at Regional One along with the Campbell Clinic surgeons for the critical and exceptional care,” a Gant spokesperson posted on Facebook. “We will give further updates as we move forward. Ron is seeing your messages and is encouraged by them and says ‘Thank You!'”
State Rep. Ron Gant is a Republican that has represented District 94, including Fayette, McNairy, and part of Hardeman Counties since 2016.
