Governor Brian Kemp is heading to Texas later this month for a $5,000-per-head-minimum fundraiser that will feature former President George W. Bush.
Tickets for the VIP reception reportedly cost $15,200. Karl Rove and Ross Perot, Jr. are also scheduled to appear.
Bush has long been at odds with former President Donald Trump. Just last year, he appeared at a fundraiser for U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY-At-Large District), who supported the second impeachment of Trump.
Bush also gave money to another Trump impeachment supporter, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).
One prominent Georgia Republican who asked not to be named told The Georgia Star News, “Bush hosting a fundraiser for one of Trump’s mortal enemies is a way for him to stick his thumb in Trump’s eye. Bush loathes Trump, as does most of his family of aristocrats. Bush likely didn’t even consider whether or not he thinks Kemp is a good choice for Georgia. He only cares that he’s supporting someone who is not Trump’s choice.”
The prominent Georgia GOP figure continued, “For Kemp, perhaps he needs a break after the last rough few days for his campaign. [Former Georgia Senator David] Perdue walloped him in the three debates. Then the former director of ICE endorsed Perdue and slammed Kemp for broken promises on border security. Texas might seem to be a more friendly place to Kemp after the last few days that he’s had.”
Trump has continually butted heads with Kemp over the 2020 election and reportedly recruited Perdue to run against him. When the former president endorsed Perdue after he announced, he criticized Kemp.
“Kemp has been a very weak governor – the liberals and RINOs have run all over him on Election Integrity, and more. Most importantly, he can’t win because the MAGA base — which is enormous — will never vote for him,” he said. “We need strong leaders who will fight, and time is running out! David Perdue will eliminate the Income Tax, secure the Elections, defend the Second Amendment, support our great Farmers, get crime in Atlanta and other places under control, take care of our great Vets, and put parents back in charge of the schools.”
