Vice President Kamala Harris will headline Tennessee State University (TSU)’s 2022 Spring Commencement next month as the ceremony’s keynote speaker. Vice President Harris will deliver the keynote address for the undergraduate Commencement on May 7th.
Vice President Harris will address nearly 900 graduates, as well as their families and friends, in Hale Stadium. TSU, located in the heart of Nashville, is one of seven historically black universities (HBCU) located in Tennessee.
“Across America, our students have worked tirelessly in pursuit of their education,” Vice President Harris wrote on Twitter. “I cannot wait to celebrate our 2022 graduates. See you soon, @TSUedu.”

Birmingham, Alabama Mayor Randall Woodfin will address TSU graduate students the day before Harris on May 6th.
“We are excited to have the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris and Mayor Randall Woodfin of Birmingham, two trailblazers and history makers, deliver the keynote address for our commencement ceremonies,” TSU President Glenda Glover said in a statement. “Commencement marks a major milestone in our students’ lives, but to have the Vice President of the United States as your guest speaker makes this moment even more special for our students and their families. I believe they will also appreciate the fact that both Vice President Harris and Mayor Woodfin are HBCU graduates, a testament to the caliber of students TSU and other HBCUs produce. The TSU family looks forward to both ceremonies and featured speakers.”
Both ceremonies will follow COVID-19 guidelines, according to the university.
Last year, Vice President Harris delivered the 2021 commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden is set to give the commencement speech next month at his alma mater, the University of Delaware, where he graduated from in 1965.
