Former President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed a movement to establish a new city, Buckhead, as one separate from the City of Atlanta.
Residents of the region organized the movement following a series of decisions from leaders in Atlanta that, they argue, led to a spike in crime.
“What is happening in the City of Atlanta is nothing short of disgraceful. It’s national news and a regional embarrassment. The good people of Buckhead don’t want to be a part of defunding the police and the high crime that’s plaguing their communities,” the former president said in a statement.
Recently, Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan (R-Cumming) assigned legislation that could influence the ability of Buckhead to incorporate into its own city to a state Senate committee dominated by Democrats.
Furthermore, Governor Brian Kemp has seemingly refused to take a strong stance on the issue.
“You’ll be glad to know, we passed a bill last year that doesn’t allow rogue local governments to defund the police, and that’s one of the reasons it’s good this debate’s going on and why I haven’t interfered one way or another, is the mayor needs to feel the pressure on this issue,” Kemp said.
Therefore, Trump, who has endorsed Kemp’s primary challenger David Perdue, blamed the governor and other leaders for the lack of action on the movement.
“However, RINOs like Governor Brian Kemp, the man responsible, along with his puppet master Mitch McConnell, for the loss of two Senate seats and 2020 presidential vote, Lt. Governor Jeff Duncan, Speaker David Ralston, and State Senators Butch Miller, Jeff Mullis, and John Albers always talk a big game but they don’t deliver. What good is having Republican leaders if they are unwilling to fight for what they campaigned on? Every RINO must go! Let the voters decide on the very popular City of Buckhead proposal!”
