The University of Tennessee System on Tuesday recommended Peter F. Buckley to be the next chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).
Buckley, who serves as the dean of the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and executive vice president of medical affairs for the VCU Health System, will now be considered by the UT Board of Trustees.
“One of the most important responsibilities the UT president has is to hire great leaders,” said University of Tennessee System President Randy Boyd, who recommended Buckley. “I have tremendous confidence that Dr. Buckley will build on our successes, while also providing innovative ideas to move UTHSC into the future.”
According to Buckley’s curriculum vitae, he has been the dean of the VCU School of Medicine since 2017 and served for seven years as School of Medicine dean at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
He is the Chair of the Administrative Board of the Council of Deans (COD) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and maintains a position on AAMC’s Board of Directors.
Furthermore, Buckley was appointed as interim CEO, VCU Health System and interim senior vice president, VCU Health Sciences and led the health system-health sciences response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a release from the UT System, the UT Board of Trustees will consider Buckley’s recommendation at a special meeting on December 6 at 5 p.m. EST.
If confirmed by the board, Buckley will replace current chancellor Steve Schwab, who announced his retirement in June. His effective start date would be February 7, 2022
The search for a replacement was composed of an executive search firm and a 14-member committee began that its search process in late July.
