A fight at a Minnesota county school board meeting Monday led to parents being ejected from the meeting space.
The topic of the discussion at the Eastern Carver County Schools meeting in Chaska was mask mandates. A video of the incident shows a few men getting physical, apparently over a disagreement about whether taking photos inside the meeting should be allowed.
Before the fight, parents were sharing their opinions on mask mandates.
Earlier in the day, Eastern Carver County Schools reportedly mandated that all students would have to wear masks until at least the middle of October, citing a rise in COVID-19 cases among children.
There is no government-imposed mask mandate for students across the state of Minnesota, and each school district has been able to decide on its own masking policy.
Nationwide, mask mandates in schools have become a lightning rod issue.
Parents in Lake Township, Ohio gathered Monday outside Lake High School to protest the school’s mask mandate. They reportedly cheered unmasked students who defied the mandate.
A group of Massachusetts parents have even gone so far as to sue the state to stop mandatory school masking.
Still, most of the decisions mask mandates have ultimately ended up in the hands of federal judges, and those judges have overwhelmingly ruled in favor of mandatory masks in schools.
In Tennessee, Gov. Bill Lee (R) banned school districts from requiring masks via executive order. But a federal judge Friday put a temporary halt on that executive order in Williamson County, Tennessee Schools. The school district began forcing students to wear masks Monday.
In Arizona, a a federal judge handed down a similar ruling Tuesday, declaring that the state’s new legislation to ban mask mandates in schools, which would have gone into effect Wednesday, was unconstitutional.
In Iowa, yet another federal judge temporarily extended a block he previously placed on a law banning school mask mandates. That ruling means that the state’s school mask mandate ban will not be in effect, at least for another two weeks.
