The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee are joining the fight to defend the recently signed election law in Florida. The two organizations filed motions to intervene in two lawsuits against the law.
The law, known as SB 90 while in the Florida Legislature, is designed to curb the chances of fraudulent elections in Florida, but critics immediately called it “Jim Crow” tactics. Civil rights groups immediately filed lawsuits against it calling it a “backlash to Black voters.”
Republican officials, like RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, said the effort by the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis “are aimed at a simple goal: making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
Similarly, Florida Sen. Rick Scott said the politicians and groups fighting the new law are deceiving Floridians.
“The lawsuits being pushed by radical leftists in Florida have no basis in fact,” Scott said in a statement. “They are part of the Democrats’ Big Lie — that any efforts to secure the integrity of our elections is racist. That is a lie and the NRSC is proud to stand with the RNC in my home state to defend this commonsense law and fight back against the Democrats’ lies.”
When DeSantis signed the bill into law, on a Fox News exclusive, he notably said Florida’s new election law will ensure Florida’s elections will remain transparent going forward.
“Right now I have what we think is the strongest election integrity measures in the country,” said DeSantis. “We’re proud of the strides that we’ve made. We’re not resting on our laurels. And me signing this bill here says, ‘Florida, your vote counts, your vote is going to be cast with integrity and transparency.’”
Much of the inspiration for the law stems from a 2012 grand jury in a South Florida case where an election fraud case was being litigated. The grand jury provided a list of recommendations exclusively to Florida legislators to ensure election integrity. Some of those recommendations were included in the new law.
