The Board of Directors of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp (NCVC) has released a statement in support of Governor Bill Lee’s decision to call a special legislative session next month.

“The Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp Board of Directors supports Governor Bill Lee’s effort to convene a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly to address public safety,” NCVC’s Board of Directors began. “The tragic school shooting that occurred on March 27, 2023, demonstrated that our great state is not immune to the rise in violence being experienced in other communities throughout our country.”

“As leaders of the hospitality industry, one of the largest business segments in Tennessee, we feel it is vital to the overall welfare of our communities that state leaders convene and seek solutions that promote public safety,” the Board of Directors added. “We submit this statement knowing that our voice joins many Tennesseans in support of such a call to action to our state leadership.”

“While the challenge is difficult, we are also heartened and hopeful by the resilient Tennessee volunteer spirit which serves as a hallmark of our great state. In that spirit, we stand ready to engage and assist state leaders as solutions are considered,” NCVC’s Board of Directors concluded.

Shortly after announcing the legislative special session, scheduled to convene on August 21, Lee said he would “meet with legislators, stakeholders and Tennesseans throughout the summer to discuss practical solutions ahead of the special session” in the meantime.

However, as recently noted by State Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Franklin) on The Tennessee Star Report, Lee “has not said anything to lawmakers about what he is aiming to accomplish.”

Lee initially called for Red Flag Laws in response to Following the March 27 shooting at The Presbyterian Covenant School in Nashville, to which Republican legislators said they will not introduce legislation for.
