Arizona Democratic Party Chair Raquel Terán refused to denounce the “Defund the Police” movement in a recent interview.
Terán, who is running for State Senate, has often touted an endorsement from Planned Parenthood. On her website, she highlights the support and says the state must “elect a Democratic majority in our state to protect access to safe and secure abortions for those who seek care.”
As previously reported, the Planned Parenthood political organization called on candidates to denounce the support of law enforcement groups in order to obtain the group’s endorsement.
When explicitly asked in the interview with Brahm Resnik, the Democratic Party chair refused to take a position, saying we need to commit to “reimagining how we use the resources” and there are “different ways we can imagine public safety.”
“Now that Defunding the Police is an official plank of the Arizona Democrat Party, Arizona Democrats’ lurch to the far left is complete. Democrat Party chairwoman Raquel Terán’s extremist position has branded Mark Kelly, Katie Hobbs and every Democrat candidate running this year as anti-police and anti-public safety,” RNC Spokesperson Ben Petersen said.
Additionally, the likely nominee in the Democratic primary for governor, Katie Hobbs, has received the same endorsement. Republican candidates, who have been endorsed by law enforcement officials, have slammed the agreement from candidates in order to obtain the organization’s support. Karrin Taylor Robson called the decision “disqualifying.”
“Arizona Democrats, from the state party chair to Katie Hobbs, all support defunding the police and will go to extreme lengths to defend their hostile position toward law enforcement,” added RGA spokesman Will Reinert. “Arizona families will never be safe with Katie Hobbs in charge, and the embrace of Planned Parenthood’s anti-police mandate is living proof.”
