Republican U.S. Senate nominee Dave McCormick resurfaced on Tuesday an 18-year-old video that features Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) warn longtime politicians who are unable to secure the U.S.-Mexico border should prepare to offer “a lot of explaining” to their constituents.

The McCormick campaign explained the video was recorded in 2006, when Casey was campaigning against former Senator Rick Santorum.

Casey argued, “Anybody in Washington, who goes around and puffs their chest up and says, ‘We’re going to be tough on the borders,’ if they’ve been there for several years or many years, they’ve got a lot of explaining to do.”

The Democrat went on to defeat Santorum in November 2006 with about 59 percent of the vote. He is currently campaigning for a fourth term in office.

A McCormick campaign spokesman summarized the clip by stating, “Before joining the swamp, Bob Casey pledged to be tough on the border.”

The spokesman added, “One look at Casey’s eighteen-year record proves that was a lie. He’s voted against the border wall, for mass amnesty, for sanctuary cities, against money to detect fentanyl, and against deporting criminal illegals. Pennsylvanians deserve a Senator who will secure our border and keep them safe, and that’s Dave McCormick.”

McCormick and Casey remain close in the polls, with a recent New York Times/Siena survey finding the incumbent with just a 2 percent lead over his challenger. The Real Clear Polling average for the race shows the men separated by less than 5  percentage points.

The Republican recently released an ad, now airing throughout Pennsylvania, accusing Casey of being “too dangerous of Pennsylvania.” Around the same time, Casey released an ad touting his ties to Pennsylvania labor unions.

McCormick’s campaign recently accused Casey of having “lost touch with Pennsylvanians” after a report cast doubts on the Democrat’s claim that he visits every Pennsylvania county during every calendar year.

The analysis of Casey’s travel schedule found that the senator had only visited 39 of 67 counties within an 18-month period.
