Tsunami warnings were promptly issued for coastal areas in the southern Philippines, as well as parts of Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Palau, and Papua New Guinea. Waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) were reported in some areas before alerts were later lifted.
Casualties stem mainly from falling debris, collapsed structures, and landslides. The death toll stands at least 32 (with some reports varying between 19–32 as verification continues), with over 200 injured and a number still missing. Rescue operations are ongoing.
The hardest-hit areas include Soccsksargen, General Santos City, Sarangani, South Cotabato, and parts of Davao Occidental. Buildings collapsed in urban centers, including a Jollibee fast-food restaurant in General Santos, while schools—reopening after summer break—saw chaotic evacuations. Landslides and power outages compounded the chaos.
