Carrie Schween, a candidate for the Germantown Municipal School District (GMSD) School Board, criticized the board for “attempting to silence parents’ voices.”
Schween is running for School Board Position 4 to unseat current School Board Chair Angela Griffith. GMSD is located in Shelby County.
At Tuesday’s school board meeting, a parent addressed the board members, pleading for them to “change their demeanor towards parents” as well as be “more transparent.”
According to Schween’s press release, less than an hour after the concerned parent made her remarks, the school board sent an official email – using the board’s logo and school district’s database – to the entire district “attacking” the woman’s concerns as well as Schween’s campaign.
“The School Board’s attempt to interject itself into this election is nothing short of shocking,” Schween’s press release states. “Equally shocking are the great lengths it goes through to twist and spin this campaign’s platform into something it is not and to refute parental concerns.”
According to her website, Schween’s platform is based on three main initiatives: full transparency for parents regarding their child’s education; being mindful of GMSD’s fiscal responsibility; and putting the education of students before all else, specifically a “social agenda.”
Carrie Schween is a lifelong resident of Germantown. She graduated from Germantown High in 1996 and all three of her children are currently enrolled in Germantown Municipal Schools, according to her website. She graduated from the University of Memphis in 2000 with a degree in political science and was a Rhodes Scholar nominee from 1999 to 2000. In addition, she obtained her Master’s of Business Administration from Union University in 2004. Carrie and her family attend Germantown United Methodist Church, her website adds.
