The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development recently released the state’s unemployment rate for the month of August.

The data shows that the jobless rate in the state increased by 0.1 percent from the month of July, bringing August’s rate to 3.4%. One year ago, the Volunteer State’s jobless number stood at 4 percent. The current rate is down 0.6 of a percentage point in a year-to-year comparison, noted by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The all-time low rate in Tennessee was 3.2 percent earlier this year in March and April.

Between July and August, Tennessee added 3,100 nonfarm jobs. In terms of jobs created, the financial activities sector created the most, followed by manufacturing and education and health services. The number of nonfarm jobs added by Tennessee employers in the last year was 114,500. Leisure and hospitality saw the largest year-over-year growth. Education and health services, along with trade, transportation, and utilities, accounted for the next highest job gains.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that all 50 states and the District of Columbia had jobless rate decreases in August from the year prior. The national unemployment rate in August was 3.7 percent – 1.5 points lower than in August 2021.

With September being National Workforce Development Month, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development urges job seekers within the state to visit the Tennessee Office of Reentry (tnworkready.com) in order to find online and in-person resources to achieve employment.

There are currently over 400,000 job openings posted from employers in and around Tennessee on the labor department’s website, Jobs4TN.gov

There are nearly 80 American Job Centers and six mobile American Job Centers across the state of Tennessee. The Department of Labor and Workforce Development invites all Tennesseans looking for work to use an interactive map to locate the job center closest to them, available at https://www.tn.gov/content/tn/workforce/jobs-and-education/job-search1/find-local-american-job-center.html
