Memphis Democrat U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) said that inflation was “not Joe Biden’s fault.”

“In Europe, gas prices have risen even higher than here and inflation is running at 8-10 percent. Inflation is a worldwide problem. It is not Joe Biden’s fault but we are doing what we can,” he said in a tweet.

“During the break, I had the opportunity to participate in the Transatlantic Dialogue. We had members of parliament from maybe six or seven different nations…I asked them what the rate of inflation was and, in every country, it was eight, nine and 10 percent. I asked them if their parliaments didn’t blame Biden for it. They laughed. Of course they laughed,” said Cohen from the well of the U.S. House of Representatives last week.

Cohen proceeded to blame OPEC and Russia for inflation and the ever-rising gas prices, excusing the Biden administration’s policies from culpability on the issue.

“Inflation is a worldwide problem. We’re doing what we can. It’s caused by the awful coronavirus and the effect it has had on production in China and it has hurt our opportunities to continue our manufacturing as we saw it before. Gasoline prices have increased the same amount in Europe as they have here,” he continued. “Is it Joe Biden’s fault? No. It’s OPEC. It’s Russia: prices have gone up about 30 percent since they invaded Ukraine. All Americans should want and should work together to reduce inflation and oil prices, but it’s not Joe Biden’s fault. It’s a worldwide problem.”

Cohen retweeted those comments on Monday, June 13.

Previously reported by The Tennessee Star, the state’s federal elected officials and several state officials expressed their dismay at the Biden administration’s policies in the wake of newly released inflation data.

“I hope come November when folks head to the polls, they remember Democrats decided to put politics first instead of focusing on the real-life issues we all face today,” Representative John Rose (R-TN-06) said Friday.

“Tennesseans are fed up with paying more for everything,” U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) also said on Friday. “Where is the Hollywood spectacle over the 8.6% inflation spike?”

“Inflation is climbing at the fastest pace in 40 years, and the cost of gas and groceries have skyrocketed,” Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said on the same day. “This is what Joe Biden has accomplished in less than two years.”

“Empty wallets and empty tanks – it’s the sad reality that far too many Americans are experiencing in Biden’s America. The Biden Administration is lost in an alternate reality,” Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) said as well.
