Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA-11), during a speech late last week about Democrats’ attempts to pass a federal takeover of elections, said that the party wants to create “a homogenous society that is easily controlled.”
Loudermilk said this on the floor of the House of Representatives.
“Make no mistake. This legislation is an attempt to circumvent state legislatures’ constitutional authority to set election laws, laws like the one recently passed in Georgia that maximizes voter access and protects the integrity of every legal ballot. One-size fits all government has never worked in a diverse and free society like we have here in the United States of America,” Loudermilk said.
“One-size-fits-all is synonymous with dictatorial regimes, socialist societies, and communist countries. Governments that keep control over the people by stripping the authority from the hands of local officials that were elected by the people to represent them. This is what this bill does.”
Loudermilk referred to Georgia’s new voter integrity law, SB 202.
Georgia’s new voter integrity law requires voter ID on all absentee ballots, increases oversight of local election boards that fail to follow state election law, and secures drop boxes around the clock. The November 2020 election saw a 350 percent increase in the use of absentee balloting, more than 1.3 million absentee ballots total compared to election day in 2018. This led to more election workers having to process more ballots.
U.S. Justice Department officials, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, announced last year they would sue the Peach State over SB 202.
Loudermilk, during his speech late last week, said Americans live in a diverse society.
“There’s diversity of thought. Diversity of action. Diversity of speech. But the actions of my colleagues on the other side is to have a homogenous society to where right and wrong is no longer determined by personal conviction or faith but what the federal government has determined is right and wrong,” Loudermilk said.
“You don’t have to look any further of how the right to determine your own healthcare has been stripped away by my colleagues on the other side, where people can no longer determine what they will and will not put into their body. We live in an independent, diverse society where local governments are the greatest authority over the people. This is a takeover by the federal government to create a homogenous society where everyone acts, thinks, and works according to the federal government.”
